Pyramids are ancient stone structures. The people of Egypt helped construct them long ago. They were used in the Old Kingdom of Egypt as a burial tomb for Pharaohs. They were known for helping them ascend into the afterlife.

Pyramids, though old, can be young compared to others. The ages have been debated, and so far it is believed that some, like the Pyramids at Giza, are about 5,000 years old. The oldest is known to be the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, which happens to be over 5,000 years old.

Usually, farmers built them. Other people from Egypt would build them too. They did it to serve the Pharaoh, and also to help the goal of him reaching the afterlife safely. The Pharaohs must have been very important. And I bet the workers weren’t paid.

| Pyramids were built in a very complex and organized manner. The slaves and workers would make the stones from either cutting them from bigger stones or help craft them themselves from natural resources around them. They would gather the many stones and take them to an area, making a base for the Pyramid. |

Ramps were built to help drag the stone up to higher levels. For about 20 years, this process continued until it was finished. After all the stones were put into place, the Pyramid was covered in a layer of white limestone and smoothed out. The Pyramid was done.

Along with the Pyramids comes the great Sphynx of Chephren. It is 20 meters high and 73 meters long. It is a statue of a lion’s body with the head of a Pharaoh. Over time, sand has covered up the Sphynx’s body, but only up to it’s head. There was a plus side to it, for then the robbers could only harm the upper part of the statue and not the lower. Sadly, the Sphynx slowly wears away every day.
