| Serve: The serve is the stroke that starts each point in tennis. Most players use continental grip when they serve. If you can throw a ball, you should be able to serve, because the service motion is a throwing motion. The two main parts of a serve are the toss and the swing. The serve is one, long motion, not a bunch of little pieces.

Forehand: The forehand shot is made with the front face of the racket and with the forearm facing the ball. The grip that is used for the forehand is the “shaking hands” grip. It resembles shaking hands with the racket. The official name is Eastern Forehand grip. When doing the forehand, you need to use your whole body to hit the shot with balance.

Backhand: The backhand shot is played with the reverse side of the racket and with the back of your hand facing the ball. On a backhand, you can use either one hand or both hands. Most players use both hands for more power and better control. Using one hand allows you to have quicker shots and a longer reach though, both are good. The grip for the two-handed backhand is actually two forehand grips, one with each hand. This stroke can be very quick and aggressive. |

Lob: The lob is a shot where the ball is directed high into the air and into your opponent’s part of the court. There are two kinds of lobs- the attacking lob and the defensive. The attacking lob is likely to be a winning shot whereas the defensive version of the shot is used to create time for movement into a better position on the court. On the defensive lob the ball is hit with under spin. On the attacking lob the ball is hit with topspin.
