One of the most incredible compilations of Maiden songs available is Edward the Great. It is a recent album combining all of Iron Maiden’s greatest hits from start to finish. These include Maiden’s smash hits Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter and the Number of the Beast. Although this album is great for new listeners, it lacks songs with the original singer of Iron Maiden, Paul Di’Anno. Also, some other good Maiden songs have been excluded. However, this is still one of the best albums out there for Maiden lovers. |

Iron Maiden has a huge range of subject material. It gives metal-lovers an escape from the constant drugs and rock and roll themes that dominated the 70’s and 80’s. Many of Maiden’s songs are inspired by movies, literature, and folktale. These include the Wicker Man, Man on the Edge, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Their broad and intelligent themes still enrapture listeners today as well as they did thirty years ago. Another thing about Maiden is their interesting sound. It’s different from the spastic riffs of Judas Priest and yet not as calm as the simple chords of Black Sabbath. Maiden is a rhythm based band with a strong shift into amazing guitar solos, without taking out the power of Steve Harris’s bass. They retain an edgy uniqueness in the metal genre, even during their live performances. By the way, Maiden is regarded as one of the most incredible live metal bands ever and their Rock in Rio and Live After Death albums prove just that. Finally, the last thing that makes Maiden great to me is their ability to stay giants in the metal genre after so long in the business. This is what makes them, arguably, the greatest metal band of all time. |
