The Caribbean

One of the Caribbean Islands is Jamaica which is located South of Cuba and 1 hour away from Miami.  Jamaica gained full independence within the British Commonwealth in 1962.  It is slightly smaller than Connecticut and has a population around 2,758,124 people.
With its tropical, hot, and humid climate, going to the beach is a popular thing.  The beaches in Jamaica are fantastic and beautiful.  Although people do go to many different beaches, there are 14 beaches that are said to be the best.  They are Negril, Cornwall, Rose Hall, Puerto Seco, Turtle, Navy, San San, Prospect, Lyssohns, Gun boat, Hellshire, Treasure, Whitehouse, and Bluefields beach.  Negril beach is the most popular and is located on the west coast of Jamaica.  Cliff diving is a popular thing to do in Negril.

Jamaica is home to more than 3,000 species of flowering plants.  There are 550 varieties and 300 can be found in Fern Gully, a river bed which is a common place that attracts tourists.

There are a lot of bodies of water in Jamaica like bays, lagoons, beaches, rivers, and a few water falls.  There are also many sightseeing excursions and towns to see.  In the towns there are an abundance of markets and shops in which souvenirs can be bought.

The number one tourist spot of all is Montego Bay.  It is full of miles and miles of beaches.  It offers endless opportunities for sailing, scuba diving, parasailing, and sport fishing.  It is lined with duty-free shops, restaurants, and bars.

Just inland is one of Jamaica’s most photographical attractions, Dunn’s River Falls.  The gently flowing water cascades 600 feet over broad rocks, allowing visitors to climb and run in the water.

Other common tourist spots are Irish town, Runaway Bay, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio, and Kingston, Jamaica’s capital.  There are a ton more beaches and bays but these are the most common.

The official language of Jamaica is English.  The average year-round temperature in Jamaica is 82˚F.  So while your sunbathing, vendors might offer to split you jelly coconuts for a snack, braid your hair in cornrows, or give you a foot massage.  If you really get hungry though, don’t worry.  No visit to Jamaica is complete without sampling the wide variety of culinary delights available on the island.  Jerked meat has become one of Jamaica’s trademark foods.
Your life will never be complete without a visit to Jamaica.  With its rich culture and heritage, you’ll never want to leave.  There’s so many things to do, places to see, and life to be discovered.
