Would it surprise you that foot fall wasn't
born in the U.S.? It was actually based on an En glish sport of rugby,
know long ago as th "carrying game". |
| |
football faced a big crisis in
1904. games were very rough. players wore no helmets and very little
padding. President Theodore Roosevelt threatened to ban the sport,
unless colleges made the game safer. Two years latter the foward pass
was made part of the game . Now a player could throw the down the feild
to a teammate to score a touchdown. |

During this time , some player
began competing as professionals. It wasn't until 1920,however, that the
first true "league" started. This organization is still with us today,
The National Football League (NFL). To attract new fans during the great
depression. The NFL adopted new rules to increase scoring.
One rule called for a smaller ball, which has been in use ever since. |
