History of Football

Would it surprise you that foot fall wasn't born in the U.S.? It was actually based on an En glish sport of rugby, know long ago as th "carrying game".
football faced a big crisis in 1904. games were very rough. players wore no helmets and very little padding. President Theodore Roosevelt  threatened to ban the sport, unless colleges made the game safer. Two years latter the foward pass was made part of the game . Now a player could throw the down the feild to a teammate to score a touchdown.
During this time , some player began competing as professionals. It wasn't until 1920,however, that the first true "league" started. This organization is still with us today, The National Football League (NFL). To attract new fans during the great depression.  The NFL adopted new rules to increase scoring.  One rule called for a smaller ball, which has been in use ever since.
The first super bowl happened on January 14, 1967.  The first two teams were the Green Bay Packers vs. The Kansas city Chiefs.  The Green Bay Packer won with the score of 35 to 10.  Since the coach of the green Bay packers was Vince Lumbardy they named the trophy after him.
This sport has become more popular over the past 40 years.  When this sport started out there were only 1,000 or 2,000 fans in the stadiums.  Now there are around 10,000 or 15,000 in a stadium to watch a football game.
