A serve is one of the most important shots of tennis.  It starts every point you play.  To hit a serve you toss the ball up in the air.  Then, point the racket up and bring  it behind your head.  As you bring the racket up hit the ball as the ball is coming down.  Your racket should end by your opposite knee.

Most of the shots you encounter in tennis are forehands.  To hit a forehand you first hold the racket in your dominant hand.  Then turn all the way sideways.  Turn to the right if your right handedand turn to the left if your left handed.  Make sure you hit the ball in front of your body at about waist level.  Your racket should finish over the opposite shoulder.

A backhand goes to the opposite side of a forehand First, turn your body (like a forehand).  Swing when the ball is about waist level.  When you swing hit the ball with a low to high swing.  like your forehand you finish with your racket over the opposite shoulder.

A volley is normally hit when you are at the net.  It is also hit before the ball bounces.  A volley is not a power shot so you do not swing at it.  First, step with your foot. Step with your left foot for a forehand volley and your right foot for a backhand volley.  Then hit the ball keeping your wrist firm.
