Whales are large and pretty well known creatures. Whales have been on the earth for about 50 million years. Whales have gotten bigger and bigger over the years and now the blue whale is the biggest animal ever. Whales are definitely large and pretty old, so they just about rule the ocean. |
| Since the whales are so big not many creatures hunt them. However humans have been killing whales since the 12th century. Many people now want to stop this cruelty and work towards a safer future for the whales. Whales have been killed for oil, baleen, and meat. Now some whales are near extinction from the amount the humans have killed. Whales may no longer exist one day because of the people. |

Whales being so big must eat a lot, right? Well it is right the do eat a lot. However, it does depend on what species of whale it is. Some have baleen which is bristle strands used to filler food from the water. Whales with baleen eat by taking in a great amount of water then spitting it out. Only water and very small creatures will get back out and the rest which is about anchovies, sardines, and herring is food for the whale. Other eating methods are whales with teeth which just chew up there food. They eat fish, baleen whales, dolphins, porpoises, turtles, and penguins. |

There are many different types of whales. The two general groups are baleen and toothed. They are separated in those groups because of their eating habits but they have other differences. Killer whales eat a lot of food and are used for entertainment. There are other whales such as the False Killer Whale which doesn’t have the same purposes. Other whales are the Northern Bottlenose, Beluga, Sperm, Blue, and Humpback whales. The blue whale is shown right. |

Orca whales also known as killer whales provide entertainment for humans. They are very easy to train to do tricks. Orca whales have very large brains and are very intelligent. They are also affectionate and gentle. Marine parks enjoy working with orcas and the whales attract many visitors. |
| Whales are very fun mammals. They play games together a lot. Some whales enjoy spy hopping which is when a whale sticks its head straight out of the water and looks around. Other whales enjoy the game called lob tailing. You might have seen this if you have ever been to a marine park. Lob tailing is when a whale goes underwater but has its tail above the surface and waves its tail back and forth then smacks the surface of the water to make a loud sound and a big splash. Anyway, Whales also enjoy breaching, where a whale jumps as far out of the water as it can then falls onto its back making a large splash. Whales sure do enjoy themselves. |

Whales are very fascinating mammals. They are very large and they rule the sea. They barely have anything to fear except humans. They eat plenty of food and love to play.
