Bill Cowher

Bill Cowher is the longest tenured coach in the NFL. He has been with the Steelers for fourteen (14) seasons.  He also ranks ninth (9th) in NFL history for longest service with one team.  Cowher has taken the team too the playoffs, ten times, capturing two (2) AFC Titles, losing 1  super bowl and wining 1 .  Cowher now 48 started his coaching career as a special teams coach for the Cleveland Browns, under his mentor Marty Shortenhinner.  Cowher and the legendary Paul Brown are the only coaches to take their teams to the playoffs, in their first six years a head coach.  Coach Cowher’s regular season record is 149-91-1.  Last year Coach Cowher led the team to 15-1 record, a club best.

 

                                                         

 

Dick Lebeau

One coach that helped Cowher last year was Dick Lebeau.  Lebeau is in his second season as Steelers, defensive coordinator, he was the Steelers defensive coordinator in the mid ninety’s, but left to become the Bengal’s head coach.  Lebeau only lasted two and a half years as head coach for the Bengal’s.  He then returned to the Steelers in ’04-05 seasons.  Lebeau is credited with making and perfecting the “zone blitz”. Lebeau also was also an outstanding player starting one hundred and seventy (171) one games strait at the corner position an NFL record. 

 

                                             

 

Ken Whisenhunt

The second coach that has helped the Steelers is Ken Whisenhunt, the offensive coordinator.  Whisenhunt, also is in second season helped bring the running game from thirty-first (31) to number one (1) in the NFL.  Whisenhunt, now forty three (43) started his coaching career in Vanderbilt, as a special teams, tight end, and half back coach.  Whisenhunt joined the Steelers staff as a special teams and tight end coach and was promoted last year, when Mike Malarkey became head coach of the Bills.  Those are the three coaches that have had the biggest impact on the Steelers.
