In 1895 William G.
Morgan had introduced basketball to some of his friends but they thought
it was too fast pace and demanding. He created a game that involves a
smaller area and less running . This game was called "Mintonette". |
| |
Morgan used
equipment and rules from other already existent games. Like tennis and
basketball . The object of the game was to keep the ball from touching
the ground. When it did a point was scored for the opposing team. There
were nine players on a court. there were three players in each row. |

In 1896 name was changed
to "volleyball" because every hit was a volley. Teams were reduced to
six players, the court was also slightly enlarged, and a lighter leather
ball was used. |

Volleyball
quickly spread throughout the United States. In 1948 American Troops
introduced the game to Western Europe. In 1947 The International
Volleyball Federation was formed in Paris. Volleyball became an Olympic
Sport at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. |
