Pittsburgh Steelers

Art Rooney Senior was the owner of the Steelers back in the 1970’s.  Art Rooney Senior has two sons and their names are Dan Rooney and Art Rooney Junior.  They are elite citizens in the city of champions.  The Rooney’s are the answer to the Pittsburgh’s problem because they are Irish, rich, powerful and everywhere.  Art Rooney Senior had the club for forty years before the club ever played for a title.  The Rooney’s made the Steelers the most successful franchise in the NFL in the 1970’s.

Chuck Noll was the number one coach in the National Football League in the 1970’s.  While Noll was the Steelers head coach, they won four Super Bowls.  The last super bowl they won was in the 1979 season.  In Chuck’s first season as the Steelers head coach they went 1-13.  This was in 1969.  But Noll had Pittsburgh in the playoffs by 1972.  Starting in 1972, Pittsburgh made it to the playoffs eight straight seasons.  This tied Landry’s NFL record (1966-1973).  By 1979, Noll had his hundredth win.  Chuck became the fourteenth coach in pro football history to reach this milestone.  Chuck Noll had a postseason record of 14-4 and an overall record of 114-61-1.

Terry Bradshaw joined the Steelers for the 1970 season.  He was the number one pick in the entire draft.  Four of the ten years Bradshaw was on the team, he was calling the plays in the Super Bowl.  Nobody else can say that.  Awards came naturally to the big, blond athlete.  Terry was named MVP of the Super Bowl in 1979.  He’s also been named the MVP of the Steelers twice (1977 and 1978).  He was the only one on the team to win the award more than one time during the 1970’s.

Joe Greene is also known as Mean Joe Greene.  Greene was the number one draft choice of Pittsburgh in 1969.  Joe Greene has become the Steelers’ senior statesman.  Greene was in all four of the Super Bowls with the Steelers.  He was also one of the NFL’s all-time best.  He was a sure-shot someday for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.  He was picked for the Pro Bowl a team record, ten times in his first eleven seasons with the Steelers.  Some say Mean Joe Greene was the single-most important person in the Steelers’ success, but he defers to the front office.

Franco Harris was a quiet hero.  Harris was one of the greatest big-game running backs in the history of the NFL playoffs.  Franco Harris went to Penn State for college.  He was the Steelers’ number one draft pick in 1972.  He was on the team when they started their record-tying eight-year reign as playoff participants.  Franco went to the Pro Bowl all of those eight years.  Harris headed for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.  Franco held two NFL post-season records such as most touchdowns scored, 17.  Harris gained 8,563 yards in regular season games.  He had seven 1,000-yard seasons, which tied him with Jim Brown’s record.

Jack Lambert has the reputation of being a mean, tough, and rough football player.  Even though he is tough he likes to have a good laugh every once and a while.  Lambert was a defensive captain with Joe Greene.  In1979, Jack Lambert was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl.  Also in that year, United Press International named Jack Lambert best defensive player in the American Football Conference.  Lambert joined the Steelers in 1974, as the second round draft choice out of Kent State.

Making big-game plays has become routine for Lynn Swann.  Swann is very comfortable in front of a television camera.  In the 1979 season, Lynn was hurt and missed several games.  In 1974, Swann was the Steelers’ number one draft choice out of Southern Cal.  Lynn Swann padded his pass-catching records in the Super Bowl.  Teammates said that he is a great, gifted player, a real athlete.  Swann gained All-American attention in the big time.

The Steelers have won five Super Bowls all together.  This year was the most recent one that they won.  They beat the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL.  The score was 21-10.  In 1974, they went to Super Bowl IX.  It was against the Minnesota Vikings.  This gave the Steelers their first Super Bowl victory.  The next Super Bowl they went to was in 1975.  It was Super Bowl X against Dallas.  The score was 14-10, which gave Chuck Noll his second Super Bowl win.  The third Super bowl the Steelers won was in 1978.  It was Super Bowl XIII against Dallas again.  The score was 35-31 and this made the Steelers the first team to ever win three Super Bowls.  Super Bowl XIV was against the Los Angeles Rams and they won 31-19.  This gave Chuck Noll his fourth and last Super Bowl ring in 1979.
