In baseball the position that you play requires different skills than others on the field. Although each position is important, different positions require different talents. If a person is a pitcher, they will need to be able to throw a good fastball and be able to learn and throw some off speed pitches as well. In the outfield, a person must be able to throw the ball a good distance and needs to be able to catch a fly ball.

The first position on the field is the pitcher. When using a score book, his position number is one. To be a good pitcher, you need to be able to put the ball in a different position on the plate while maintaining good velocity and accuracy. You also need to be able to keep your arm strong and be careful not to hurt your arm when pitching. The best way to avoid this is by stretching out your arm before the game and make sure your arm is fully warmed up before you start to pitch.

The picture to the right is a catcher. When using a scorebook, his position number is two. This is the main position that I play. To be a good catcher, a person needs to have a strong throwing arm, good reaction time, and the ability to block a ball when it is in the dirt. A strong throwing arm is used to throw the ball down to second base when a runner is stealing. Good reaction time is useful for knowing if the runner is stealing or not. Also, they need to be able to catch a ball in the dirt because the pitcher’s pitches are not always perfect.

The picture to the left is a first baseman. To play this position, a person would need to be able to catch a ball good and have good hand-eye coordination. A person really needs to be able to catch because they would look like a fool if they couldn’t catch and got hit in the face with the ball. They also need good hand-eye coordination because people’s throws may not always be good.

The position of shortstop is a well-liked position; on a scorecard, their position number is 6. To be able to play this position well a person needs to have a strong throwing arm and needs to be able to field a ground ball well. The strong arm is to needed because they need to get the ball to the base quickly.

The outfield is what I feel one the most unappreciated positions on the field. It is because people feel that all they need to do to be able to play the outfield is catch a fly ball. But in reality, it requires much more than that. Yes, you need to be able to catch a fly ball, but you also need to be fast. That way, you can get to the ball quickly. Also, you need a strong throwing arm. That way, you can throw a person out if they are trying to get to a base.
