The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera first started as a novel written in 1911 by a man names Gaston Leroux.

Years later, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided to write it as a score for a play. It was originally based as a horror film, but Webber wrote it as a romance play that was set in Paris. He set the lead role, Christine, as his wife, Sarah Brightman.

When the chandelier was first introduced to the play, it consisted of 6,000 beads. It took five people to make this masterpiece, and after it was built, it weighed a total of one ton.

Two years after the play’s London Premier, the show opened for Broadway. It preformed in a total of 119 cities and 24 countries worldwide. The production won 50 major theater awards in that time.

Finally, in 2004, the famous Broadway musical was made into a motion picture starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. It had 3.2 billion box office sales to date. And finally, on January 9th, 2006, The Phantom of the Opera was proven to be the longest running Broadway musical ever!

And even today, it is celebrated for it's 20th Anniversary
