Chapter 1: In this chapter the specials are born when a mysterious fireball comes from space at the time all 113 were conceived. It also shows how the world discovered their powers and that the government monitored their progress.

Chapter 2: In this chapter Dr. Welles comes to investigate the second death of a special, Peter Dawson, who had the power of invulnerability. He recollects how Peter grew up and lived alone. He died from suffocation. Then it goes to him showing John, the main character of the story, what happened.

Chapter 3: In this chapter John goes to consult Randy about the murder and to see what he knows about Lee Jackson, the first special to die. It shows how he was taken in by an old lady and her death and how he died avenging her.

Chapter 4: In this chapter we go to a special who has grown up thinking she has no powers. She retells her childhood and at the end of the chapter we see that she has the power to raise the dead.

Chapter 5: In this chapter John goes to see a special with the power to speak with the dead and he finds out that Jason was the killer.

Chapter 6: In this chapter John goes to go and confront Jason. He finds an impersonator. All the specials start to take sides.

Chapter 7: In this chapter the government starts to round up some specials with the help of others. Randy and John start to evacuate all the specials the can. At the end of the chapter john beats up Matt another special.

Chapter 8: in this chapter the runaway specials meet at a house. The government finds the location of this place and attacks it with the help of their specials. They kill a few specials and this causes a power over flux and the rests power increases ten fold and they become impervious to bullets. Critical Maas enters and takes over Chicago.
