Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois.
Walt was the fourth boy in a family of four boys and a girl: Herbert,
Raymond, Roy, Walt, and Ruth. Throughout his childhood, his family
moved several times to different cities and back, to wherever his father
was offered a job. The Disney family lived in places like
Marceline, Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas, and Chicago. In 1909,
the Disneys lived on a farm in Marceline growing corn, wheat, sorghum,
and barley. The family also raised pigs, cows, and chickens.
As a kid, Walt had a pet pig named Porker, who eventually became the
model and inspiration for the Foolish Pig in "Three Little Pigs".
His little sister Ruth always admired him and tagged along whenever he
went somewhere. Walt had a very strong relationship with his older
brother, Roy, who loved to help and encourage him. When Roy got
his paycheck, he bought Walt a toy or a set of paper and sketching
pencils instead of spending it on himself. That year, Walt's
father was diagnosed with typhoid. The disease was caused by
bacteria in the water from their well. Also, Herbert and Raymond
left home to work in Kansas City. Walt's father's illness and the
leaving of Herbert and Raymond made continuing to live on the farm
impossible. The farm was them sold at an auction and went for a
decent price; the family made enough money to pay off all their debts
and travel to Kansas City to join Herbert and Raymond.
In 1917, during World War 1, Walt asked his parents' permission to enlist in the army. Walt, being 16, wasn't allowed. So he lied about his age and forged his parents' signatures |
