Navy Jets Navy Aviation is used when Navy ships are undergoing enemy fire, used for bombings and stealth missions. The Navy’s F-4 Phantom was created in 1957. It was the first Navy plane. In the 1960’s the F-14 Tomcat was made. It was a replacement for the F-4 Phantom. The F-4 Phantom could only attack an enemy aircraft or slow flying cruise missile. Its replacement was the F-14 Tomcat. The Navy needed something to attack more then slow flying missiles and enemy aircraft; they needed something to attack enemy bases and ships too. The F-14 Tomcat is still used today, but it has some minor modifications to it. With the modifications it is capable of going Mach 2.34 or 1,564 miles per hour. |

Missiles Every Navy Fighter plane carries at least one missile. An AAM missile uses heat seeking sensors, and it uses a special filter to keep it from heading for the sun and locked on to its target. A sparrow missile is a semi-active radar homing missile. Since it is a semi-active homing missile the plane that launches it must stay locked onto the target from anywhere between a 65 degree angle from the cone of the planes nose. |
