Most historians believe that in Derby, England around A.D. 217 when Romans occupied the country. The Romans probably played this game and passed it along. Rugby was invented from the game of soccer. Soccer was the only football game in the United States until the 1870s, when American football was introduced.

Some rules to play soccer which are an important aspect of the game. You are not allowed to use your hands, only the goalkeeper is allowed. The only time a player is allowed to use their hands is when the ball goes out of bounce and they have to throw it back in to play. You are not allowed to push or shove another player. If you do it's going to be a penalty kick.

There are 4 main positions, forwards, midfielders, defenders, and the goalie. The forwards are players who stay close to their opponents' goal so they can score. The midfielders help on defense and help bring up the ball for the forwards. The defenders try to protect their goal from the opponents scoring. The goalie tries to save or block the kicks the forwards make.

On the United States soccer team the newest member Freddy Adu is helping the team reach their dream to win the World Cup Championship in 2005-2006. Right USA is tied for first place with Mexico with 20 points, in the North, Central American and Caribbean Zone. In the European zone England is winning by one point from Poland.

Michael Platini for France has scored three straight goals that won his team three titles as well as European honors.
