Heats and Lanes- Each even is broken up into heats or races. The heats are unlimited in the possible total number in each event. The first hear has the slowest seed times and the last heat has the fastest seed times.

The lanes are also organized by speed. The slowest swimmers are in the outside lanes and as you move inward the swimmers get faster so the fastest people are next to each other. The number of lanes in a pool varies.
