As a cheerleader, your job is to create and maintain excitement and energy. One of the best ways to do that is through the use of jumps. Well-executed jumps are eye-catching, and when a squad is able to jump in unison, it looks terrific to the crowd.
Jumps are great additions to cheers and chants. They work very well during player introductions, and are particularly appropriate after very exciting plays on the field.
Jumps should never be used when something bad happens to the other team, like a player being injured. Always remember that you’re cheering for your team, not against the other team.
Flexibility is the key to the toe-touch, one of the hardest jumps a cheerleader can do.
Practicing kicks can help improve your flexibility, which will make your jumps better.
Jumps have three parts: the approach, the jump itself, and the landing. Chose arm motions for the jump that work together with the jump to give you as much height as possible. The real height of the jump will come from your legs, as well as the way your swing your arms during the approach.
Before you start working on actual jumps, practice your approach to the jump. The approach gets you into the air, and gives your body the energy and momentum to get as high off the ground as possible.
