Pit Fall |
|
In 1997, Kennywood decided to build the world’s tallest and fastest free-fall ride. The ride’s tower, which is about 20 feet taller than any previous free-fall ride, replaced the Phantom Phlyer in Lost Kennywood. The 251 foot tower is so tall, that FAA regulations mandated that it had flashing lights. The ride lifts riders to the top at speeds up to 16 feet per second. Then, it drops them at a free-fall rate of 100 feet per second, or 60 MPH.

Skycoaster |

The Skycoater made its Kennywood debut in 1994. On this ride, the adventurous are put in a full-body flight harness at the loading platform, which is on the Lagoon Stage. They are then pulled to the top of the 180 foot launch tower, where by pulling a rip cord, riders fall face down and are swung like a pendulum. Riders can reach speeds of up to 60 MPH and come within 9 feet of the Lagoon Stage floor as you’re swung from two stainless-steel cables, each capable of supporting up to 9,000 pounds. The “fliers” swing back and forth several times before they are lassoed in and pulled to a stop by the ride’s operators. The Skycoaster has also become a terrific spectator ride, providing a thrill show every 10 minutes, with six flights an hour, all day long. | |

Racer |
|
The Racer, Kennywood’s third coaster, was built in 1927 at the cost of $75,000. It replaced the park’s old racing coaster which was built in 1910. Although the Racer appears to have two tracks, it actually has one, long, continuous track. The train that starts on the left side of the loading station will finish on the right side, and vice versa.
