Wrestling could arguably be one of the oldest sports known to man.  It can be traced back to 15,000 years ago in old cave drawings.  Old Babylonian and Egyptian relics show wrestling using most of the common moves that we use today.  In ancient Greece, wrestling occupied a prominent place in legend and culture.  Wrestling was considered a brutal competition in all aspects of the game.  The Romans borrowed from the Greek wrestling but took out most of its brutality. The first recorded match was in 708 B.C.  Wrestling was a supreme contest in the Olympics.  During the Middle Ages, wrestling was still very popular.  Many court houses enjoyed wrestling. Some included France, England, and Spain.  Early Americans brought the tradition from England.  They had matches at parties, festivals, and many town fairs.  The Indian tribes took up on the sport and started having competition themselves.  They wrestled many of the colonists.  The sport flourished throughout the early years of The United States of America.  The first organized tournament was held in New York City, New York in 1888.  There were very few wrestlers and it was a Greco Roman style tournament.  Greco Roman was a more popular style in the early years.  Then for a period of time, many tournaments were held.  In 1912 the first ever NCAA championship tournament was held in Ames, Iowa, United States of America.

TODAY-Wrestling today is a true test of strength, not only physically, but mentally too.  Those who wrestle give their time, body, and complete dedication.  It feels great to win, but at the same time losing can be tough.  If you lose, there is no other guy to blame it on.  The spotlight is always on you.  Wrestling today may be well overlooked but it takes true guts to do it.  Wrestling is not for everyone.  It’s only for those who wish to devote everything it takes to be a true champion.
