Cael Sanderson- (June 29th 1979) Cael grew up in Utah.  He grew up on wrestling.  He and his brothers all wrestled through high school and into college.  He attended Wasatch Leber High School.  He graduated and like his brothers before him, he attended Iowa State University.  There he wrestled 185 pounds for the team.  When he arrived, he did not know he would accomplish great things.  He went 159-0 during his four year college career.  He won four NCAA championships.  That is very rare.  He now wrestles for the United States of America Olympic team.  He will be wrestling in the summer 2008 Olympics.

 

              

 

Kurt Angle- He was born on December 9th.  He attended Mount Lebanon High School, right here in Pittsburgh.  His high school career was going well until his sophomore year.  His father had an accident and died.  He used this as a motivation.  He graduated high school and attended Clarion University.  In 1991 he had 33 straight wins.  That year, right before the NCAA finals, he injured his knee.  He still wrestled and took 2nd.  This was a major loss to the man.  In 1992 he went 26-0 and won an NCAA title.  He finished his college career at 116-10-2.  In 1996, he wrestled on the Olympic team.  The young star took home the gold.  After he won, he said “Nothing will ever compare to winning the gold medal in the toughest sport in the world”.

 

 

                 

Ken Chertow- Ken’s high school career was nothing very special.  After high school he attended Penn State University.  His college career was a different story.  During his college career, he won three NCAA titles, two Junior Nationals, and two Junior World Nationals.  He also was a three-time Academic All American with a 3.6 grade point average.  After college after college he went on to wrestle in the Olympics.  He now runs many famous world wide wrestling camps.

 

              

Bruce Baumgartner- Not much is known about Bruce’s high school career.  His college career was a good one.  He finished 134-12 with 72 pins.  He was the 1980 NCAA runner-up.  In 1982 he won it all.  After college he went to the Olympics and had many great accomplishments.  He won his 1st gold medal in 1984.  He was a national freestyle champ from 1980 through1996.  That is one of the longest streaks in history.  In 1984, he won the Olympic gold as well as in 1992.  In 1993 and 1995, he was world champ once again.  He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2002.  He currently is a motivational speaker and runs many camps throughout the U.S.  He also holds many Olympic records including most Olympic medals, most world championship medals, and most national titles.

 

              

Rulon Gardner- Rulon was your average farm boy.  He grew up in Afton, Wyoming.  His high school career was nothing special until his senior year.  He Won Wyoming State Championship.  After high school, he attended the University of Nebraska.  In 1995 he won the national Greco Roman Title.  He couldn’t wrestle in the 1996 Olympics due to staph infection.  He won many international tournaments leading into the 2000 Olympic team trial.  He won the trials and was going to the Olympics.  He won all the way to the finals where he would wrestler and unstoppable Russian who hadn’t been beaten in many years.  He won the match which was later called “The Miracle on the Mat”.  Four years later, after an almost fatal accident, he won bronze and retired right after the match.  He then wrote a book about his life.

 

                   

Dan Gable- Dan could be the best wrestler in history.  He went to Waterloo High School and finished at 64-0 with 25 pins.  He then attended the University of Iowa.  His freshman year, he went 17-0.  His sophomore year, he went 37-0 and won an NCAA championship.  His junior year, he went 30-0 with 25 straight pins, an NCAA record.  He also won another NCAA championship.  His senior year, he was 40-0 going into the NCAA finals.  He lost his 1st and only match in his college career.  He finished high school and college career at 182-1.  He won two NCAA championships and three time All-American.  In the 1972 Olympics, he won gold.  He did not surrender a point in six matches.  He has one famous quote, “Once you have wrestled, you can accomplish anything”.  

 
 

These were some of the greatest wrestlers in the history of the sport.  They accomplished many things and deserve to be here.
