During the 1940’s, due to war, fashion still was not a huge deal. War and sports clothing were obviously very popular. The infamous year of CoCo Chanel’s “disappearance” when her secret romance with a high Nazi official surfaced, army hats were very popular. For young girls, everyone had to have bobby socks, plaid skirts, and linen jackets with wide shoulders. Dior entered the fashion realm with controversial high heels and corsettes. Parts and separates became popular along with the army braid hair style.

In the 1950’s, the big things were Nylons. Everywhere you looked, there were advertisements for Nylons. Figures hugging pants, skirts, shirts, and dresses were becoming popular and acceptable. Paris was still the big fashion capital of the world back then. Brightened lipstick, liquid eyeliner, and penciled brows were the common make-up choice. Paralyzed studs were popular earrings. Colorful prints, skirts with full length petticoat skirts and slim fitting blouses. The pencil skirt was also a must have.

1960’s were the best time to be wild and fun. Fashion trends blossomed there like never before. Hippies and beached bums were all the rage for rebellious teenagers and young adults. Dior was pushing for the “Girl Next Door” look with long skirts, which was contrasting, to the infamous mini skirt. Beehives were a popular hair style, along with long straight locks. Wool suits and little hats were the more sophisticated day wear. Bobby socks, boots, and leather were very common shoe types.

The 1970’s were almost identical to the 1960’s. Hippies, beach bums, and sophisticates were all very popular then. Dior was still pushing the same fashion line, and teenagers were still in their rebellious stage. Lighter weight clothes were common. A popular outfit would be flared trousers, platform shoes, and floral print design fabric. Ethnic fashion and style trends as a result of broader travel experiences. For evening, women often wore full length maxi dresses or evening trousers or glamorous halter next cat suits.

The 1980's were a big fashion year with two main sections; punk and prep. Prep being everything besides punk. Main fashions for the punks were, ripped jeans, fish nets, big bracelets, dark eyes, big earrings, etc. The more casual teenager or prep, wore extremely tight jeans and big shirts or off the shoulder shirts. Cut off sweatshirts, pumps, mini skirts, crimped and teased hair were also very popular styles. The style for both groups then was definitely form fitting. Converses and keds were popular shoes. The colors were very bright. Fashions were retro in the late 1980's. The music was also techno.
