Ferrets

Ferrets are a lot like kittens because most things that work for them will work for Ferrets (shampoo, food, litter, EST.). But I think you should try to buy the stuff made for Ferrets.

Ferret Proofing- Ferrets will try to get everywhere, knock over everything, and steal it too. Ferret proofing is never done. First you must ready to clean up ant messes your Ferrets make on daily basics. For your Ferret will tip over trashcans and any light or fragile objects. Ferrets will also steal and drag away any objects that want. You will probably find the objects under furniture or in it. Yes Ferrets will find ways into couches, chairs, and other large furniture. You have been warned.

Feeding- Ferrets are carnivorous animals. So they eat meat and need lots of protein in their diet. Ferrets have a very short digestive track, so they need to eat and poop a lot. You should have food and water available to them at all times. Ferrets need protein and all ferret foods will have ambled enough protein and other vitamins. It is a good idea to give your ferrets supplements every once in a while (such as a fat supplement).

Ferret baths- No one really knows when to give a Ferret a bath. Some say once a month and other say only when they are dirty. I say one every 2 months, because Ferrets like to keep themselves clean. A ferret's body temperature is about 101 to 102 degrees. So the temperature of the water should be around 99 degrees. Shampoos for your Ferret should be all natural or Ferret brands. Warning most ferrets hate water!  When the battle is done dry your Ferret off with a towel or they will do it themselves by dragging themselves on the carpet.

Cleaning Ears- You must clean your Ferrets ears. It is very hard because he will squirm and fight you for every second of the way. I recommend getting someone's help to hold him down. Use an ear cleaning solution that will work for kittens. Then cover a cotton swab then gently clean tier ears. Don't go into their ear canal though!

Ferret Illness- Ferrets are prone to many illnesses and can be hurt quite easily due to their ability to get into unlikely places. The best way to recognize if your Ferret is sick or hurt is to be with your Ferret. You can recognize if he is acting different. If you take him to a vet make sure the vet will treat your Ferret. Many vets consider Ferrets to be an exotic species and won't treat them. Also many Medical schools don't teach how to heal a Ferret. If you can't find one check with your local pet shop and they should know where one is. For more information on Ferrets sickness you should check out this book "The Ferret" written by Mary R. Shefferman.
