Bethel Park Band Program

The IMS band is comprised of a 7th grade band, and an 8th grade band. Each band has a variety of instruments and play a variety of music. The size of both bands varies from year to year. Each band performs in the annual Christmas and Spring Concerts. The band students practice 3 days a week during the school year.

The band is directed by Mr. Michael Petrossi. He is a very dedicated teacher and has been nominated, and has received awards from the “Teacher excellence” group. With his hard work and dedication, the 8th grade bands participate in the PMEA Adjudication each year. The band plays approximately 3 pieces, and then they are evaluated on their performance, by three judges. Sight-reading, or playing a piece you haven’t seen before, is also evaluated. It isn’t uncommon to see “Superior” awards in the band room.

Besides the 7th and 8th grade concert bands, IMS has a Stage band, a Wind Ensemble, and countless other small group ensembles. The stage band plays at many events, and the Wind Ensemble participates in the Adjudication.

Every year, both bands participate in the annual Bethel Park Marching band festival, where marching bands from around the surrounding areas come to “show off.” The IMS bands get to be a part of the Pre-game show, where the National Anthem is played, along with an American Tribute.

The students are lined up on the sides of the traditional “Shield” formation that the marching band is in. The 9th grade band, under the direction of Mr. Len Lavelle, also participates in this wonderful event. Overall, the evening is a night full of excellent music, and a night all will enjoy.

Overall, the IMS bands are a great thing to be involved in. Music is great for anybody of any age, and that message is widely spread throughout the music wing. Although IMS has an outstanding band program, is is only the beginning of a great musical career at Bethel.
