About Him

Seabiscuits Family

Seabiscuits family was known for it good racing. His mother and father were Swing On and Hard Tack. But the real legend in the family was his grandfather Man O’ War. He was a magnificent thorough bred and was a triple-crown winner. That’s mainly why most trainers were disappointed with the breeding but he eventually became as well-known or even better known than his grandfather, Man o’ War.

Seabiscuits Career

Seabiscuit was a very fascinating race horse and also won a lot of races. He didn’t only win a lot of races but he also won most of them too. Through out Seabiscuit’s career he made over 430,000. Just some examples of the races he was in are the Santa Anita Handicap, Agua Caliente Handicap, and the San Miguel Handicap. For Seabiscuit bad start his career was phenomenal.

  Birth/Death

Seabiscuit had a very short life for a most horses. He was born on May 23, 1933 at Caiborne Farms, Kentucky. He was only 14 when he died of an apparent heart attack. He was pronounced dead on May 17, 1947 right before his birthday. Once Red Pollard, the jockey, and Charles Howard, owner, found out they were devastated and said “It seems like only yesterday”.

A Symbol

During the Great Depression Seabiscuit was a symbol for most common people. He was a symbol of hope and faith. When people were down they could look to him to find joy. Since he was like the little guy that became a winner and kept with it even when times got rough he helped people a lot. When they were having problems they saw how he pulled through and realized they could do it too.

His Appearance

If you would look at Seabiscuit his appearance wouldn’t match his record. Most successful horses were tall, thin, and “perfect” but Seabiscuit was very different. He had a limping in his walk, a wheezing when he breathed, and was barely 15 hands. Seabiscuit was the exact opposite of most winners. I think that’s what made people love and root for him, because of his “imperfection”.

Seabiscuits Injury

The race after Seabiscuit defeated War Admiral, when no one thought he could be beat again he got hurt! It was at Santa Anita on February 14, 1939. He injured his left foreleg. It was so bad that the wet said Seabiscuit wouldn’t race again. But again when all hopes were down Seabiscuit pulled through, healed, and races again.

Pumpkin

Since Seabiscuit wasn’t treated the best when he was younger he was full of rage and meanness. He was also very restive so when he was in the stall he wouldn’t kick and moan. To keep him from doing this they brought in another horse called Pumpkin to keep as his companion. They took Pumpkin with them to every race and anywhere else they went. Even horses need friends to play with.
