After more than a decade of Pirate Football, they received a player named Bill Dudley. He was a famous running back. The crowd would cheer watching him tear through the defenses of other teams. On 1942, Bill Dudley had a league-best 696 rushing yards.

| During the 1940’s, the Pirates’ Head Coach Buddy Parker made a key trade to the San Francisco 49ers for halfback, John Henry Johnson. Johnson ended up being a key player for the Pirates offense. He rushed more than 4,300 yards during six years. He earned his spot in the Hall of Fame. |

1972, Steelers drafted Franco Harris out of Penn State. He was to be the key player of the season. After a slow start at the beginning of the 1972 season, Harris rushed for more than 100 yards in six straight games. Led by Harris, they won nine out of ten games winning the AFC Central Division. The Steelers went to the Playoffs and lost to Miami Dolphins.

| Another great player of the Steelers was Frank Pollard. He ran for a high team record of 3,989 yards. He played for the Steelers during the 1980-1988 seasons. Overall, he was a major player and helped lead the team to super bowls. But, this running back did not out rush today’s Willie Parker during the both of their first games. |

Among the most Steelers Players, Terry Bradshaw is probably the most well-known player. 1970, he was the first round pick out Louisiana Tech. He started the 1971 season. He didn’t always start because his first couple of years wasn’t as successful. But, he eventually became a great quarterback with a total of 27,989 yards. He played from 1970-1983.

| Another great Steelers Player was Troy Edwards. He used to play for the Steelers through seasons 1999-2001. He currently plays for the Detroit Lions. During his years as a Steeler, he led as one of top Pittsburgh receivers with 61 catches and 714 yards. |
