Penn State’s football stadium, Beaver Stadium, is one of the most interesting stadiums in college football.  The stadium is named after James Beaver who was a lawyer and brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War.
Beaver Field was built in 1893 and only seated 500 people.  The first game that was played at this stadium was on November 6, 1893 when Penn State defeated the University of Pittsburgh 32-0

New Beaver Field, which was located adjacent to Rec. Hall, was opened in 1909 with Penn State defeating Grave City 31-0.  However, in 1960, New Beaver Field was dismantled and moved in 700 pieces a mile across the Penn State campus so that they could construct Beaver Stadium.  On September 17, 1960, Beaver Stadium opened.  In 1980, an expansion project raised the seating capacity of Beaver Stadium to 83,770 with lights added to the stadium in 1984 and the addition of walkways in the top end of the end zones (which lowered the seating capacity to 83,370).  In 1999, a 93 million dollar project was put into effect that added a second deck of seats in the south end zone along with several other upgrades.  Beaver Stadium has always had a real grass playing surface.
Today, Beaver Stadium is the second largest college stadium with a capacity of 107,282.  The record for consecutive Beaver Stadium wins is 21 from 1970-1974.  Beaver Stadium is an amazing field that has a milestone of history!
