The Ups and Downs Of The Penguins

 The 1991 Stanley Cup

In 1991 the Stanley Cup was the 99th year of the cup.  It saw two powerful teams each hoping they could take home the cup.  The two teams were the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks.  The Penguins swept the Blackhawks taking home their first cup.  The Penguins were led by Tom Barrasso, and Conn smythy trophy (MVP through playoffs) winner Mario Lemieux.

1992 Stanley Cup

The 1992 Stanley Cup saw the Penguins take on the young talented Minnesota North Stars.  Although the North Stars put up a good fight, it was just not enough for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  The Penguins won 4-2 in the series.  This was also the second Stanley Cup in a row for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Mario Lemieux also took home his second straight Conn Smyth trophy.

Lemieux Retires

Another down point for the Pittsburgh Penguins came in late 1998.  When team captain Mario Lemieux retired from hockey.  The announcement left Pittsburgh Penguin fans in tears.  It was the biggest loss of a player since Michel Briere.

Losing Jagr

In the off-season of the 2001 season the Penguins lost one of their biggest stars, Jaromir Jagr.  For the time he spent in Pittsburgh, he and Lemieux won two Stanley cups.  Lemieux was winding down and Jagr was gone.  All hope seemed to be lost for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Pittsburgers loved Jagr and it hurt to see him gone.

The 2005-2006 Season

The 2005-2006 season looks promising for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  With key free agent signings such as, John Lechlair, Ziggy Palfey, and Mark Rechhi.  Not to mention the drafting of 17-year-old Sidney Crosby the future looks bright for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Last Three Years

The last three years were not good years for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Those years saw the Penguins finish last in the division.  The Penguins lost respect from other teams, and they lost their fan base.  This also made Mario Lemieux look bad.  So those last three years were low points for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
