In the 1983-84 season saw The Pittsburgh Penguins fall to last place in the league getting them the first overall pick in that years NHL draft. With that pick they took none other then Mario Lemieux. Lemieux was considered a star in the making and did not disappoint. Lemieux finished the season with 100 points in his first year. He also made the All-Star team, and was named rookie of the year. It was clear to the fans in Pittsburgh that they definitely made the right choice that day.

Lemieux Buys The Pens

On September 3, 1999 U.S. Bankruptcy court approved Lemieux's proposal to buy The Pittsburgh Penguins. Though he was an owner/player he still had full control of the team.

Michel Briere

Tragedy stuck in 1970 for The Pittsburgh Penguins when there star rookie center Michel Briere, who finished third on the team in scoring died in a car crash. The Penguins honor Briere as they retired his jersey high up in the rafters in Mellon Arena.

Drafting Crosby

In the summer of 2005 The Pittsburgh Penguins struck gold when they got the first pick in the NHL draft. With that pick they took 17 year old Phnom Sidney Crosby. Scouts for every NHL team said that Sidney Crosby was miles ahead of anyone else in the entire draft. All of the scouts said he has incredible speed, great puck handling abilities, a tremendous shoot, and terrific leadership qualities. He won the Junior Hockey MVP twice, as well as the Junior Hockey Championship twice. It Seems to be that Crosby is going to be the franchise player that the Penguins were hoping for.
