“Life Guard Dog”: Newfoundland’s have gotten the nickname “Lifeguard Dog” because of how much they like to swim. Like many dogs they have webbed toes. This makes them excellent swimmers. Because of their webbed toes and their love for the water it was natural for them to save lives. For many years many Newfoundland’s have saved thousands of lives from drowning. Since they are also strong dogs it is easy for them to swim through rough waters. When people recognized this talent they made or trained many Newfoundland’s to be life guards at pools and with the Marines. Very few of these dogs still do that today |

Famous Newf’s:
Probably the most famous Newfoundland is Seaman. Seaman was the Newfoundland that Louis Clark took with them on their journey into the Louisiana Purchase. He assisted them like any other man in their crew. He also saved many members when they would sail down river and they kept them from drowning. Another Newf that is not very commonly known is “Nana” from Peter Pan. In the movies it is played by a St. Bernard because it is a more known dog. |

Cares and Needs:
Newfoundland’s need certain things to live a long and happy life. They need brushed everyday because of how much fur they have. They also need to be walked because if they get to heavy it will down on their hips. The biggest thing is love and happiness for him/her. They love interaction with humans. |
|
Life Span:
A regular life span of a Newfoundland is about ten to twelve years. A female usually lives longer than a male. That is because a male is bigger and can have more problems than a female. If you care for your Newfoundland well they can live up to about thirteen to fourteen. |
