Golden Retriever

Behavior:

Golden Retrievers are one of the most lovable dogs you can get. They are never bad-tempered or violent towards a human. They always have a kind expression on their face. It is not always fun and games, they are also always alert. They like to be self-confident and are always eager for something new.

Appearance:

Most Goldens are a fawn or lighter brown color. Some you came get in a creamy-white. Most are “gold” color, which is where they got their name. They always look happy and eager for something new. Some have the straight sleek coat and others have wavy hair. Mostly under their neck, legs, or ears if they have wavy hair. Whenever you see a Golden Retriever look for the gentle twinkle in its eye.

Origin:

They are said to come from England in the 19th century. Also, they are said to be decedents from the Grusachan dogs. The first person to have a Golden Retriever was Lord Tweedmouth. It was on a Sunday in the 1860’s. , the first Lord Tweedmouth was on a walk with his son and he noticed a cobbler had a yellow colored rather than black or brown. He was the only yellow puppy out of the litter; he was impressed by it and paid the cobbler’s debt. He named him “Nois”. That was the start to the Golden retriever.

Hunting Dogs:

Since Lord Tweedmouth they have been using Golden Retrievers as hunting dogs. That is where they got the other half of their name, Retriever. Mostly they used them for this because they always have boundless energy. All the running and finding things are very fun for them and keeps them healthy.

Grooming:

Grooming is probably one the most important thing to do when you have a Golden Retriever. Since they are hunting dogs it is necessary to keep his skin and coat in good condition. After they are done hunting or coming back from a walk check for burs on their fur. If you’ve done that make sure his/her coat is tangle free, by combing and brushing. If you hunt with your Golden Retriever make sure you spray him/her weekly for ticks and fleas.

Golden Retrievers are the second most popular dog for a family to have. They are great with young kids. The first two years of “puppy hood” they are very energetic and active.
