Fielding

Gloves

Gloves are the most important item in fielding.  They are used to field or catch a ball that is hit to one of the many fielders.  Gloves for pitching can not be too flashy because they could distract the batter.  The fielders may also use batting gloves to provide extra padding for their glove.

First base

The first baseman is one of the positions vital to fielding. The main duty of the first baseman is to cover first base and to field a ball hit to him.  Covering first base is very important.  First basemen are usually left handed but can also be right handed.

Middle Infield

Middle infield is very important to fielding because they get the relays and cover second base.  The middle infield consists of two positions.  One of the positions is second base.  Second base has to cover second when a ball is hit to the left side of the outfield.  The second baseman also has to cover first when a ball is bunted and the first baseman charges.  Shortstop, the other position, has similar expectations.  The short stop has to cover second when the ball is hit to the right side of the outfield.  On a bunt the short stop must also cover second or third base depending solely on where the runner is.

Third Base

Third base is another very important position in the infield.  The fielder has to cover third base and also charge down the line to try and field a bunt.  The third baseman can be either right-handed or left-handed; it won't really affect the fielding.

Outfield

The outfield is the last line of defense that the fielding team has.  The outfield consists of three different positions.  The first position is left field.  Left field has to get any ball that is hit from the left field line all the way to left-center. His other duty is to back up the center fielder.  The center fielder is located in the center of the outfield.  His duty is to get any ball hit to center, left-center, and right-center.  He also has to back up the left fielder and the right fielder.  The right fielder is located in the right of the outfield.  His job is to field any ball hit from the right field line all the way to right-center field.  He also has to back up the center fielder.

Pitcher

Pitching is the most important fielding position on the whole field. The pitcher regulates the flow of the game depending on how well he is doing.  If the pitcher is doing well then the game will move along quickly, but if not then it will be a slow game.
