Before you decide to add a member to your family, remember that
every family member must take responsibility for your new dog. Some
responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
feeding the dog, walking the dog, giving it water, and cleaning up its
mess. There's also the financial responsibility. The price of a
well-bred pup can start at $1,500. Other additional costs for the first
year, according to The Incline, the Three Rivers
Mountain Dog
Club newsletter, can be: food, $200-$1200; veterinary care, $500 to
$4,200; licenses and microchip, $50; obedience class, $75; supplies,
$150 - $500; toys, $50 - $500 (no kidding); fencing, $200 - $5,000, not
to mention new car for big dogs, new house with bigger, yard, new
replacement rug.
The size of the dog depends on its gender. Males average out to be
between 25 to 27.5 inches and 90 to 120 pounds. Females are on average
23 to 26 inches and 70 to 100.
The best environment for a Berner is with his or her family inside. When
the family is outside your Berner will more likely follow you outside.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are good with children and other pets.
Grooming your dog is an essential part in your daily routine. This will
also help your puppy to bond with you. You should brush your Berner
daily, and bathe him or her usually twice a year with regular brushing.
Health and regular care are very important for your little pup.
Immunizations shots, worming and veteran care are all vital to your pup
or dog. There are many diseases this breed can catch. The may include
but are not limited to the following: hip dysplasia, defects in vision,
epilepsy, various cancers, and bloat. Hip Dysplasia can be so bad that
you have to euthanize your dog. Good breeding can reduce some health
problems.
Berners are very addicting. Not many people can own just one. Berners
are not good guard dogs though some dogs may be protective of their
family and their property. It is ideal that you have some type of fence.
