What Are Berner's Like?

Berners are very calm dogs. They make a great companion dogs for people of all ages. It's beautiful appearance and gentle, quiet nature attracts people to Berner and makes them fall in love with the dog. If you don't like to walk for long periods of time then a Berner is right for you.

Bernese Mountain dogs want to work and please their owners, but until they are full-grown, Berners should never be forced to exercise for long periods of time. They get tired easily and if you take too long of walks, they'll probably just sit and won't move for a while. They're as stubborn as a mule.

Bernese Mountain Dogs require lots of attention. If you leave Berners alone for hours and rarely give them attention, they'll let you know. They may get mean and nasty. If you provide lots of attention for you dog, they'll be the perfect companion.

When it comes to visitors, this breed of dogs become very cautious. They tend to sit back and watch the situation for a while. As long as the dog feels safe around the people who are visiting, they will warm up to your guests by leaning on the guest's legs and sitting right on the visitor's feet. When they do that, they want your company to give them lots of attention. Another way they greet guests and family is by going between the legs of your guests and expect them to rub the dog's back end. This runs in the breed so do not take it personally.

It is usually pretty easy to train this breed of dogs, because they are very intelligent. You need to be enthusiastic when you're a training your dog. You need to use a kind, firm hand. Harsh training can break the Berners gentle, kind spirit.
