Training

No Spoiling!

The first step in training your Maltese is to avoid spoiling.  The biggest mistake many new Maltese owners make is to baby and spoil their puppy and not teach them good members.  Carrying your everywhere you go, over looking house training errors, and encouraging bad

behavior are mistakes that new Maltese owners make.  Like any dog, the Maltese requires training, discipline, consistency, and puppy kindergarten class.

The Principals

The first step in training involves teaching the dog human words for each good behavior and

activity.  This way the owner can more easily participate in the dogs domestic education by directing her to perform specific actions appropriately.  When training you should use a lure such as treat.  This way it is possible to teach your dog to assume any body position and later on perform on request.

Rules

If we did not train our dogs, they would chew, bark, and highlight a few places in their living space. As an owner we must tell them where and when to do these things.  The most problems with this develops when your puppy first comes home so make sure you teach your puppy good habits from the start.  Also, make sure your Maltese goes outside on a regular basis to avoid messes in the house and never let her make a single mistake.  Let her know where you want her to go and when she does.

Teach your puppy what toys are hers.  When you see your Maltese biting and chewing something that is not hers, make sure you tell her no and give her one of her toys.  Fun toys will keep her interested and will certainly be your puppy’s favorite hobby.
