Grooming

Many Maltese owners ask how to keep their Maltese’s hair looking healthy.  The first step is to get your basic grooming supplies like combs, slicker brush, scissors, nail clippers, rubber bands, hair dryer and you’re ready to go.  Start with your Maltese as a puppy and teach him to roll over on his back or side so grooming is much easier.

 
 

The best time to do this is when he is tired and willing to rest. To keep up with your Maltese looking mat free, brush him twice a day while misting fur with water to avoid breaking in the coat.  You should visit the groomer monthly for a shorter,   You should visit the groomer monthly for a shorter, more manageable cut and bathe weekly. 

   

If you are up to the challenge and want to keep your Maltese’s hair long, trim with scissors weekly and tie hair above eyes in to a top not.

 

                     Feeding

Puppies require a very high intake of proteins, calories and nutrients than adults due to their rapidly developing bodies. 

 

 
    Most brands of kibble meet these requirements and are so carefully planned that it is unwise to add anything but water. 

 Dry Food is also less expensive and if your Maltese doesn’t like it, you can always sprinkle some water on it.

  because the Maltese in general does not like dry food.  When you first get your Maltese he will probably eat three meals a day divided by the recommended amount of food by the veterinarian.
 

To Good Health

The Maltese is a very healthy breed and does not have many medical problems.  However, it is important that Maltese owners are aware of a few inherited disorders specific to the Breed. 

 

 
 

 Because most veterinarians do not specialize in small breeds, you should remind your veterinarian of diseases like Portosystemic Shunt, Luxated Patella,

 

White Dog Shaker Syndrome, and Collapsing Truchea.  Also, ask your vet about vaccines and medication such as heart guard.
