Knowing The Golf Course

Golf courses have 9 to 18 holes to play.  An 18 hole golf course has four holes that are par threes, ten holes that are par fours, and four holes that are par fives.  Each hole starts at the tee box.  This is where the player puts the ball on the tee (a wooden peg) between two markers and hits the first ball of each hole

Hopefully your first shot lands in the fairway or on the green on the par threes.  The fairways are the areas between the tee box and the green that has been designed to play on.  The grass on the fairways is shorter than all the other grass areas except for the greens.

If you missed the fairways then most likely the ball is in the rough.  This is the grass that surrounds the fairways and the length of the grass is much higher than the fairways.  Bushes and trees can be found in the rough.  You definitely want to keep you ball out of the hazards.  These are the bunkers (sand traps), ponds, lakes, creeks and marshes.  These are put on the courses to make playing the game a little harder.

There is always a chance you hit the ball out of bounds.  This is usually marked with a sign or white poles.  You definitely what to try and not hit is out of bounds.

Once you get past all of that hopefully your ball is on the green.  The greens are smooth areas of grass where the hole or cup is.  This grass is very short for putting the ball into the hole.  The grass that surrounds the green and is a little longer then the green is called the fringe.  To mark every hole there is a pole with a flag on the top of it in each hole.  This can be pulled out when putting.  Hopefully when you putt the ball it goes right in the hole.
