Sister Parks

  Idewild

Idewild Park is one of Kennywood’s sister parks.  Kennywood purchased Idewild Park in 1983.  Idewild consists of Soak Zone, Storybook Forest, and of course, the park itself.  Idewild is much older than Kennywood.

Idewild started out in the nineteenth century as a railroad park.  It was smaller than Kennywood was.  Unlike Kennywood, Idewild had a much more natural atmosphere.  Like Kennywood, Idewild was founded by the same family: The Mellons.  Like previously mentioned, Idewild is much older than Kennywood.  When Kennywood was founded in 1898, Idewild had already been in business for nineteen seasons

In 1932, the Mellons put in an eighty by two hundred foot swimming pool.  It had a sand beach and cost approximately seventy-five thousand dollars.  Without this pool, Idewild wouldn't have survived the Great Depression.  During this time, other rides were built including a Penny arcade, Kiddie auto ride, Whip, Rumpus and a Ferris wheel.

Idewild is famous for its Storybook Forest.  When the baby boom started, Idewild created a land called Storybook Forest.  It is a nursery rhyme themed with many structures representing a nursery rhyme, including Jack and Jill and the little old lady who lived in a shoe.  Many children and adults still enjoy Idewild today.

  Sandcastle

Sandcastle is enjoyed by many people and Pittsburghers.  On a hot day in 1987, Harry W. Henniger Jr. (President of Kennywood) thought Pittsburgh needed a water park.  So on December 5, 1987, Kennywood bought the land where sand castle stands today.

Sandcastle is known for its slides.  They have many slides.  Three slides really stand out.  The tallest water slides were the three speed slides.  The tallest of the three is eighty-five feet tall and two hundred fifty feet long.  There is a twenty-five foot slope and then a sixty foot drop down the slide at lightning speed.  It’s called the Monster.  The two smaller slides are similar.  They are also two hundred fifty feet long but they are sixty feet with a fifty foot drop.  They are called the Lightning Express.  You go down the slides on your body.  Many other slides use mats and tubes. Sandcastle also has a quarter mile Lazy River.  To this day, Sandcastle is loved and used by many people.
