CLASSIC VETTES

Like few other legends, the Corvette had some rough years.  But after putting in a V8 and styling the car different made sure that the Corvette had a future.  Every year Corvettes keep on getting better and better.  It proved itself to be the world’s best sports car.  By 1962 it had become an American icon.

In 1953 the corvette came in one color, Polo White.  They all had red interiors.  Only 315 Corvettes were made that year.  The Corvette had a black canvas soft top and white walls.  It had 115 horse powered engine and an automatic transmission.  This car would cost you about $3,850 in 1953.

In 1955 the Corvette almost died due to low sales.  That year only 674 Corvettes were made.  Some people blame the car’s bad start on the lack of back seats; while others blamed it’s transmission and engine.  But at the beginning of 1955, the Chevy engineers decided to give the car a second chance.

In 1956, a Corvette was priced at $3,120.  Chevy built 3,467 Corvettes that year.  It’s weight was about 2,980 pounds.  The car to the right is a 1956 Corvette.  It has the optional removable hard top (costing an extra $250), a signal seeking AM radio (costing an extra $199), and white walls (costing an extra $32).  The hood vents looked sporty but they were not functional.

The 1957 model’s outside was identical to the 1956 model’s.  The 1957 Corvette cost $3,176.  It had a 283 horse powered engine that cost an extra $726.  The only option that cost more was the heavy-duty racing suspension which cost an extra $780.  An optional 4-speed manual was added midyear.  It cost $188.

The 1962 Corvette took a combination of the 50’s headlights and 60’s taillights.  The 1960’s taillights was the beginning of the style of taillights you see today.  The 1962 Corvette was the last year for exposed headlights.  It was the last year to have a solid rear axle.  The price reached $4,000.  They made around 14,500 Corvettes that year.
