Bats in slow-pitch and fast-pitch come in all different lengths and weights. In fast-pitch a lighter bat works better, so you swing faster. Most bats are made of aluminum, alloy, or graphite. |

Helmets in softball are required. This protects you from the chance of getting hit in the head with a ball. In fast-pitch it is required (in some areas) to have a safety cage on your helmet. In slow-pitch you are not required to have a safety cage. |

| Each fielder is required to have a glove or mitt when on the field. Catchers and first basemen’s have a choice to have a mitt instead of a glove. This is because mitts have more padding and they can use that padding to prevent hand problems from hard throws. |

Catchers are required to wear a face mask, chest protector, throat protector (attached to chest protector), and shin protectors. When a play is at home the shin protectors protect their legs from sliding cleats of the offensive player, also if they are hit by a pitch when catching. The mask and chest protector keep the ball from breaking any bones in the face or chest when catching. |

Bases are a big part of the infield. Home plate is a white rubber pentagon surrounded by 7 foot by 3 foot rectangles, also called the batters box. First base is sometimes a double bag. A double bag has two bases instead of one. The orange bag if for the runner and the white one is for the infielder, this helps prevent many collisions. But sometimes they just have the plain rubber first base. Second and Third base are white or yellow rubber squares that are 15 inches length and width and 5 inches thick. |
