Without the Rooney family, there would not be a team named the Pittsburgh Steelers. Art Rooney had a huge impact on the success of the Steelers, and the majority of Pittsburghers know that.
Art founded the Steelers on July 8, 1933. This made the Steelers the fifth oldest franchise in the NFL. He originally named the Steelers the Pittsburgh Pirates, but the name was changed to the Steelers in 1940.
b Art Rooney was born on January 27, 1901 in Coultersville, Pa. Rooney was the oldest of nine children, and he grew up in Old Allegheny. He was an exceptional athlete, especially in the boxing and baseball. He had a promising career in baseball that was cut short due to an arm injury. Art married Kathleen Mcnulty on June 11, 1931, and they had five sons.
By the mid-1960's, Art Rooney began to turn the organization over to his oldest son Dan. Dan Rooney had worked in every part of the organization by then too
