Chuck Noll surprised the fans and franchise when announcing his retirement on December 26, 1991. The Steelers needed to find someone to replace Chuck Noll. About a month later the Steelers hired Bill Cowher as their new head coach. The fans believed that there wasn't anyone that couple replace Chuck Noll, but it did not take long for them to be convinced that Cowher was the man for the job.
In 1992, Bill Cowher's first team gave Pittsburgh its first AFC Central championship in eight years. He was named the National Football League coach of the year. At age 38, he was the youngest coach to lead his team to a superbowl.
Even in 2001, Cowher is still one of the premier coaches in the league. In 2001, the Steelers made it to the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots. In despite of getting there, the Steelers lost to the soon to be Super Bowl champions.
Today Cowher is still working on getting his first super bowl win. He seems to be getting one step closer to his goal every year. In 2004, Cowher chose "Big" Ben Roethlisberger in the first round. Roethlisberger lead the Steelers to a 15-1 record in the regular season, just to lose in the AFC championship game. Who knows, maybe next year the Steelers will get the one for the thumb.
As I mentioned before Chuck Noll coached the Steelers before Bill Cowher. There have been many Steeler coaches, but Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher have definitely been the most dominant. Noll was hired to coach the Steelers in 1969. The Steelers played horrible in 1969, finishing with a 1-13 record. Even though the Steelers had a rough season, Noll still knew exactly what he wanted to do. He began drafting future Hall of Famers year after year. He drafted Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Joe Greene, and many more. Totaled up, Noll drafted 6 players who are now in the Hall of Fame. Noll created a superstar team that would be soon to achieve success.
Noll coached the Steelers for over twenty seasons, but he is known most for the years 1970 through 1980. During this era, the Steelers won four super bowls under Noll's coaching. The Steelers won these super bowls in 1974, 1975, 1978, and 1979. This made Noll the number one ranked coach in the 1970's.
Despite all of the success, the 1980's were not as astounding as the 70's. As the players careers winded down, the Steelers seemed to accomplish less and less. Although, Noll stuck with the Steelers before retiring in 1991.
Chuck Noll is a great coach that will never be forgotten in Steelers history. He is now in the Hall of Fame, and he will go down as one of the greatest to ever coach the game.
