STREET SKATING is probably the most popular genre of skateboarding. It consists of skateboarding on the streets on familiar objects such as ledges and hand rails. Some professional street skaters are Eric Kosten, Rick McCrank, Jamie Thomas, and Geoff Rowley. There are 2 divisions of street skating...

Gaps:  olliing or performing tricks over or down a gap such as a set of stairs

-Three popular tricks to do over gaps are kickflips, spins, or 360 Flips. An ollie is when you simply jump on a skateboard. Flip tricks are when you spin or flip the skateboard underneath your feet and land on it.

Grinds:  sliding across an object using either your deck or your trucks.

-Usually, grinds are done on either handrails, ledges, or tables/benches. A 50-50 grind is when you grind an object with both trucks. A boardslide is when you grind an object with the middle part of your deck, between the trucks.

VERT SKATING is when you skateboard on a halfpipe or a bowl. It is called vert skating because you are skateboarding on a vertical ramp. A halfpipe is a ramp that has 2 vertical sides. It kind of looks like a pipe cut in half horizontally. You start at the top of one side and go back and forth, gaining more and more speed until you are able to get air.  Some popular vert skaters are Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist,  and Andy MacDonald. There are 2 divisions of vert tricks...

Spins:   when you complete a certain degree spin in the air before you land back on the ramp.

-A 180 is when you spin around 180 degrees. A 360 is when you spin 360 degrees and so on. A 900 is the biggest spin ever landed and it was preformed by Tony Hawk. It consistes of 2 and 1/2 spins. He landed it in the 1997 X Games.

Technical: Tricks involving grinding, spinning, and grabbing the skateboard.

-At the top of both sides of a half pipe, there is a metal strip called a coping. It is used for grinding. Some board involving tricks are mute grabs, mctwists, and Japan airs.

FLATLAND is a style of skateboarding formed in the 80s by Rodney Mullen. Some flatland tricks are...

Primo Slide: When you flip the board on it's side, stand on the wheels, and slide across the ground.

-Rodney Mullen usually begins or ends these tricks with a fliptrick.

Casperslide: When you place your front foot underneath the tail while the board is flipped upside down and slide.

-Once again, Rodney Mullen usually begins or ends these tricks with a fliptrick.
