The PlayStation 2 was the next generation in the PlayStation family.  It is still made by Sony.  Now it has more competition, namely Nintendo's Gamecube and Microsoft's X-Box.  Both, in fact, are more powerful than it.  The PS2, however, sells better than both of them, which is quite an achievement for the
weakest system of the bunch.

The PlayStation 2 was released in September of 2000.  It was the first of the three main video game systems to be released.  However, the first models were somewhat defective, so the PS2 has went through several changes throughout its life.  It is still the only backwards compatible system, which could be the reason of why it actually did so well.

There are currently hundreds of games out for the PS2.  Many of which are made by companies that have had their start on the original PlayStation.  As it is with any new system, there weren't that many games at the system's launch, but as time went on, there were tons and tons of them made.  There not
being many games at first was one of the reasons why backwards compatibility was so important.

The PS2 runs much faster than the original PlayStation.  Its new Emotion Engine runs at around 300 MHz.  The graphics synthesizer can run at up to 75 million polygons per second.

That is over two hundred times faster!  Instead of using CDs as gaming media, the PS2 uses DVDs.  As previously stated, the it is backwards compatible with the PlayStation.

Like with the original PlayStation, the PS2 has a bunch of accessories.  Instead of using a memory card of very small

capacity, it uses an 8MB memory card.  Since the DualShock was invented, that has been the standard controller for any PlayStation. The PS2, unfortunately, still needs a multitap if people want to play with more than one friend.  Luckily, the PS2has an online mode where you can play against people from all around the world.

Sony has now entered the handheld competition.  Previously, Nintendo had a chokehold on this particular gaming category.  Now, however, Sony has entered with the PSP.  Although you can't play your favorite PS2 or PlayStation games while you're on the run, you can play the games that have been
reformatted to be on UMD (Universal Media Disks) disks.  This is impressive because the tiny little thing plays the games with PlayStation 2 graphics.
