The sport of BMX racing started soon after the invention of the BMX bike. This is when the NBL started, which is the National Bicycle League for racing. Just like every other sport, it is broken down into different regions and classes which are determined by age and skill level.
For racing, you want the lightest bike possible. It also has to be a bike that feels good to your body. The sport of racing is done on sand and dirt tracks, with more jumps with smaller lips that allow you to float over instead of being thrown up by a steep lip. Its also very challenging to master the art of jumping smoothly.
In professional racing you need body protection. For most leagues, a full face helmet is required, but many others use gloves, pads, and sometimes even a chest protector depending on the course. If your just getting into racing, you want to start off easy. Start off by learning the basics of getting your speed right, your balance in air, and learning to spot your landing.
Get used to the types of jumps. Don't push yourself too far too fast, unless your an experienced rider, you should take the time to get good. Practice at the BMX track in South Park, its free admission and sometimes during the summer they turn the park lights on and keep it open late at night. Practice doing the course fast, because the more speed you can have throughout the course, the better your position will be. Being on the inside or outside of a track really doesn't matter, since with all the turns you will end up on both.
It takes serious determination to become the best, and a lot of practice, but if you do get good enough, there are many benefits that you can attain. The pro racers that you see, get offered sponsorship, which means that as long as you race and do good while wearing their company name on you, they will pay for your trips to competitions and new parts.
