Being on time

Being on time is an important part of playing tennis. If you are scheduled to play at a certain time, you should be there at least 10-20 minutes early. Also, it is fine to be there right on time. If you are late however, there are things that could happen. The rules are that for every 5 min. you are late you loose 1 game. If you are 30 min.- to an hour late, you could loose one set or be disqualified.

Foot Fault

In tennis, you could get penalized for a foot fault. A foot fault happens when you are serving and you step your foot over the baseline. While serving, you must keep your foot behind the baseline until your serve is complete. If you do a foot fault on your second serve, than you loose one point.

Line Calling

When you play friendly or in junior tournament matches, you will usually make your own line calls. Judge as best as you can. If the ball lands out of the court then call it right away. If any part of the ball lands on the line then it is in. If there is any kind of line disagreement then play the point over again. This is called a let or another chance.

Handshake

At the end of a game, it is very important to congratulate your opponent even if you win or lose. You could either give them a handshake and say good game or you could go up to them and thank them for playing.

Serving rules

The first serve of every game is taken from the right hand side of the court. Serve behind the baseline and serve diagonally so that the ball bounces into your opponent’s right service box. You alternate from right to left courts to serve for every new point. Each player serves for one full game.

Tiebreakers

When the final score at the end of a set is tied or (6-6), the players play a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker is played until one person gets all the way to 7 points. Whoever wins the tiebreaker wins the game.
