When the
co-creators, Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, created Grease they didn't want
to make a traditional musical. They wanted to create a new kind of
Broadway musical. So, they wrote the music, lyrics, and book. |
| Casey and Jacobs
wanted this to be a new style of classic. they wanted to use music from
the late 50s and characters from the best days of rock'n'roll. They wanted
to capture the dress, manners, morals, and music of teens of the beginning
of this rock era. |

|
The show meanly revolves
around two teens. Danny Zuko, a greaser, and Sandy Dumbrowski, a goody two
shoe. It is about them and all their friends. It has problems like fitting
in, romance, and other problems that face teens. This show has been a hit
for teens everywhere. |
| Although, Grease was
nit always a hit musical. It had a pretty rough start. It first opened, to
the public, at an experimental theatre in Chicago on February 5,1971. It
was staged as a 5 hour amateur production in a trolley barn. The public
loved it and moved to off Broadway at Eden Theatre. |
|
 |
Finally, it moved to
Broadhurst on Broadway, where it made its world theatrical premiere on
Broadway in 1972. The original cast from this show featured Barry
Bostwick and Carole Demas. |
| In 1979, Grease took
over the record for the longest running show on Broadway. It had a run of
3,388 performances. This was the record until1980 when A
Chorus Line broke it. Grease was then transferred to Royle on
Broadway. Grease was not just successful on stage, but on the big screen,
too. |

Grease was one
of the most successful musicals gone movie. It starred John Travolta, as Danny,
and Olivia Newton-John, as Sandy. When the movie came out in 1978 it was a
hit and the musical became ever more popular. The movie was the highest
grossing movie musical. The movie helps keep the amazing music and style
of Grease alive. |
| To keep the
tradition of Grease alive ,too, the show is still going on. There is a new
production that is still on Broadway and touring around the U.S. This
production includes all the original songs plus the ones from the movie.
This show opened at the Dominion Theatre in 1993. The London Production
finished after 6 successful years at the Cambridee Theatre in 1999. But
there are still shows going on in the U.S. With the movie and these shows,
the magic of Grease will rock'n and roll'n for generations to come. |
