Cats was based on the Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, by T.S. Eliot. The lyrics were also by T.S. Eliot. The music was by Andrew Lloyd Weber, who also did Jesus Christ Superstar.
Cats is an opera, so there is no spoken dialogue. The show revolves around cat characters and, the singers have to be the cats. That means they have to look, act and move like them. Their character names are even cat names.
The original Broadway cast included: Betty Buckley (Gizabella), Terrence V. Mann (RumTumTugger), Stephan Hanan (Asparagus), Timothy Scott (Mr. Misoffolees), Ken Page (Deuteronomy), Reed Jones (SkimbleShanks), Bonnie Simmons (Griddlebone), Christine Langher (Rumbleteazer), Rene Clemente (Mungojerrie), and Harry Groner (Munkustrap).
Cats was originally produced at the New London Theatre on May 11, 1981. It began to run in New York at the Winter Garden Theatre on October 7, 1982. People who have seen the show have fallen in love with it. It is a truly amazing show. The last song called "Memory" is a beautiful song that really makes the show complete.

T.S. Eliot died in 1985. 18 years later he received a Tony Award for Cats. Cats was the longest running Broadway show in history. On for 18 years and had 7,485 performances. On Sunday, September 10, 2000, Cats came off Broadway. It still tours and does shows throughout the country and England, though. So, if Cats ever comes to a city near you, be sure to see it and, you'll have a wonderful memory that will last forever!
