Dogs that are all-around family dogs, accepting and loving all members of the family from young children to the elderly, make very desirable pets. They want the family's of approaching strangers; however, once the stranger is welcomed into the home the dog helps welcome then. Most Golden Retrievers love affection and enjoy being petted. Some Goldens, however, are content to be at you feet by don't like being hugged or cuddled. You have to respect the dogs for their style in giving and receiving affection.
Grooming

Some Golden Retrievers can be hunting dogs, and after they have been out hunting they need to be groomed. Hunting dogs need extra care which is necessary to keep his skin and coat in good condition. After they have been out hunting on land you should check his coat for burrs.

They do not comb out easily so you may have to separate the hairs around the burrs to avoid stripping out the coat when removing them. After you get all the burrs out you have to comb or brush the dog's coat to make sure the coat is tangle-free. A little grooming after each trip will keep its coat healthy and shiny. If you hunter has been retrieving in water it is important to wash its coat. Usually a gentle hosing off outside in nice weather so he could dry off before entering the house. During the flea and tick season, the dogs should be protected from infestation be using any prepared spray, powder or dip weekly. After the dog swims and is dried, it is necessary to treat him for fleas and ticks.
              Feeding

Before your puppy comes to live with you ask the seller what food you should feed them. It is important for your puppy to stay with that diet for awhile. When you decide to switch your puppy's food, each day add small quantities of the new brand to the usual food. A great deal of money and research has resulted in foods we can serve our dogs with confidence and pride. Try to serve your puppy its meals at the same time each day and in the same location so he will get used to his daily routine and develop good eating habits.

Training

Your puppy needs training in the correct forms of behavior in this human world. You cannot expect your puppy to become the perfect pet overnight. A successfully trained dog can be taken anywhere and behave well with anyone. But it is that one crucial word training which can transform an aggressive animal into a peaceful, well-behaved pet.

Your puppy should become used to a collar and leash as soon as possible. Let your puppy wear his collar until he is used to how it feels. After a short time he will soon become accustomed to it and you can attach the leash. When you begin giving your puppy commands, make them as short as possible. Also try to use the same words with the same meaning at all times, for example, "Heel," "sit," and "stay." You must be consistent; other wise your puppy will become confused.
                                  Behavior

One of the most frequent complaints about canine behavior is barking. Aside from dogs biting, dogs barking is probably the pet peeve of many non-dog owners. Barking is a natural response for many dogs. They have an inherited predisposition to barking as an alarm when other dogs or people approach their territory. Barking is relatively effortless, and it is such a natural response for many dogs that is admittedly hard to eliminate with either punishment or a program of conditioning non-barking.

Health Care

From the moment you purchase your puppy, the most important person in both your lives becomes your veterinarian. His professional advice and treatment will assure the good health of your pet. The vet is the first person to call when illness or accidents occur, do not try to be your own vet or apply human remedies to canine diseases.

However, just as you would keep a first aid kit handy for minor injuries sustained by members of your family at home, so you should keep a similar kit prepared for your pet. Toys make of hard rubber are usually safe for dogs. But soon enough the rubber tends to be brittle, to crack, to dust off, and to be extremely dangerous to dogs that like swallowing things. On the other hand toys made of nylon could well be the safest of all toys, providing the nylon is annealed. Nylon that is not annealed is very fragile, and if you smash it against a hard surface, it might shatter like glass. It could also happen when the weather is cold and the nylon drops below freezing. There is only one line of dog toys that is made of annealed virgin nylon and that is Nylabone, These toys are not only annealed but they are favored and scented.
