Judo was originally formed from Jujitsu a Japanease form of martial arts. Jigoro Kano practiced Jujitsu and thougt that there was a deeper meaning to the art form. Kano expirimented with different styles untill he created one all its' own. Jigoro opened a dojo (or teaching hall) and taught Judo to the ambitious students.
Judo helps find the peace and strength within. Professor Kano enforced this theroy allowing his students to be relaxed. He even set up a multiple level dojo in Tokyo, Japan. That's when judos' popularity spread.
Judo is mostly composed of ground work. The throws and holds help make up  the composition. There are such thows as Morote-se-otoshi, Sumi-otoshi, Ippon-seoi-nage. Chokes are also practiced frequently in Judo.
For judo classes you need a thick knitted gui witch is a uniform with pants and a jacket. You also need a belt to show your rank. Judo uses different colors to represent ranks (or levels) guis can also be multiple different colors instead of the traditional white. Also, instead of bare feet students can wear sandals or socks when practicing off the mat.
As in all martial arts students and teachers bow at the begining and the end of classes to show disiplin and respect. Also, when an instructer is speaking a student listens attentivly. They also pay attention to what the instructer is saying.
Since judo is a widely practiced martial art it is accepted as a official event in the Olympic Games. Most countries have their own teams.  There are also smaller competitions for all forms of Martial Arts. Competitionsare a greatplace for students to show off what they learned.
As you can see, Judo is a peaceful art that brings the strength within yourself. It even has history leading all the way back to Japan. With all of its' Jujistu based moves it sure willleave you down onthe ground (literly).
